It’s getting to be the end of the month again and we’re firing up the projector again, this time with our friends from Volcom.

The Volcom Pipe Pro in Hawaii started off 2013 with a bang in the world of surfing with young John John Florence taking first place. Vee-co has compiled a highlight film of the contest and we will be one of the first to show it in such an intimate venue. We are proud to announce the Santa Monica Pier Paddleboard Race and Ocean Festival is right around the corner.  A great contest and event happening right on our very own beach! The all day event takes place Saturday, June 8, 2013 and will feature an expanded slate of new events, including kids beach and ocean competitions, a lifeguard and surf history pop-up museum, as well as a Tommy Bahama rum lounge and a Sierra Nevada beer garden. Hula dancers will perform throughout the day on the pier deck. Live music and an awards ceremony will follow the completion of the races for the top finishers in each of the divisions.

Many of the sport’s top competitors are expected to attend and participate in the new 5.5 mile Elite Race and battle for the Tommy Bahama Team Challenge SUP Relay Cup. The paddleboard races are officially sanctioned by the World Paddleboard Association, with points counting towards the WPA Championships later in the year.

Historic exhibits will feature antique surfboards, paddleboards, lifeguard equipment and vintage automobiles tied to local beach culture. Paddleboard racing was a popular Santa Monica sport in the 1940s with two paddleboard clubs headquartered on the pier.

On Saturday, May 18th, Hurley and ZJ Boarding House will be putting on the second ‘Rip My Shred Stick’ event in Santa Monica.  It’s another great opportunity Hurley offers young surfers in the area to gain experience and have fun with professional athletes.  Two years ago, we helped put on the event and it we could see how big a boost it was for the groms involved.  The surfing “contest” will be followed by a BBQ at ZJ Boarding House and then a special presentation of the event itself later on in the evening.  You can see you or your kids hitting the lip with the Hurley pros that very morning!  First 75 kids to sign up are in… sign up here and drop off the app and waiver at the shop!

Designer Dan Mann explains, “The UNIBROW has roots in a design I’ve been riding as my regular short board, mixed with what I’ve learned from designing and riding the dominator, sweet potato and potato-nator. The outline curve is compressed from a regular short board without sacrificing the width needed to maximize paddling and planing speed. The goal was to design a very high-performance short board that didn’t feel too ‘bulky’ in good surf when you can ride something other than a groveler. The rail profile is dropped and very sensitive, especially through the tail. The bottom has and aggressive single concave that starts in the nose, carries through the deep spot forward of the fins and splits into a subtle double concave that then directs the water flow to the inside of the front fins.”

The BAKED POTATO offers the same small wave performance as the Sweet Potato with a few subtle design adjustments. The nose is pulled in slightly and some of the rail volume has been removed to allow for even faster rail to rail transfers. The BAKED POTATO has the same aggressive double concaves and ‘V-spline’ running down the center of the board which allows the board to get up on the rail much faster than the overall design would indicate. Primarily designed for smaller, weaker conditions, the BAKED POTATO will surprise you by its performance characteristics, and how the quad fins set further back and closer to the rail than usual, allow the board to hold with- out sliding, even in larger surf. Get cooking on a BAKED POTATO! More technograin boards will be arriving periodically.

TIMBER TEK represents a significant step forward towards the holy grail of any product designed and manufactured in today’s environmentally conscious world.
