Night Sesh 2014 rolls on in August with the Emmy winning ESPN 30 for 30 film ‘Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau,’ a 2013 Tribeca Film Festival selection, directed by Sam George (Riding Giants) and produced by Stacy Peralta (Dogtown and Z-Boys) and Paul Taublieb (The Vow).
Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau chronicles how a shy young islander battled against cultural and even racial bias to become not only one of Hawaii’s most famous surfers, but a pioneering lifeguard at one of the most dangerous beaches on earth. How both in and out of the ocean he fought to retain the dignity of his people in a New Hawaii, where the spirit of the islands has reduced to tourist poster copy. And how, during the epic journey of the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokule’a to Tahiti in 1978, he gave his “last full measure” in the effort to save not only the lives of his shipwrecked crewmates but the soul of Hawaii itself.
“Eddie Would Go” is a phrase that has long carried deep meaning with countless Hawaiians and surfers worldwide. This movie goes beyond those famous three words and chronicles the remarkable life and power of Eddie Aikau, the legendary Hawaiian big wave surfer, pioneering lifeguard and ultimately doomed crew member of the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokule’a. With a rich combination of archival imagery, contemporary interviews and meticulously researched historical source material, this film is a compelling exploration of the tragic decline and extraordinary re-birth of the Hawaiian culture as personified by a native son whose dynamic life and heroic death served as inspiration to an entire spiritual movement.
Night Sesh is in full support of Boarding for Breast Cancer, a non-profit organization that promotes a healthy lifestyle and awareness through skateboarding, surfing and snowboarding. We will have a raffle during intermission to support them as well as free popcorn and Earth Coco water throughout the night.
