For almost a year, ZJ Boarding House has teamed up with Billabong to make a flagship store–operated and controlled by the ZJ staff.
Where our surfboards and wetsuits once were, we now have Billabong, Element and Honolua clothing, Nixon watches and headphones, VonZipper sunglasses, DaKine backpacks and more accessories.
  
Telling this story to friends and customers happens everyday here and will continue for years more. We hope to have Billabong and friends on board for ages to come!
Last week, the Billabong men's design team spoke to us about the details of their boardshort and T-shirt lines.
 
Billabong incorporates recycled materials and organic fibers in their garments, without sacrificing comfort and durability. Their slogan, "Be The Change," invites us all to participate in an environmentally responsible way of life.
Billabong has won best environmental product many times over by developing boardshorts and T-shirts made from plastic bottles in their Recycler Series, and with the use of Cotton In Conversion farms–which refrain from pesticides or chemicals in the growing and manufacturing of fibers. By next year, Billabong hopes to offer 80% of their shirts with organic or recycled materials. Here is a link to their eco-collection.
 
Also, they’ve teamed up with Surfrider on the Project Blue campaign. Here, they raise $2 for every purchase of certain items from companies under the Billabong umbrella and direct it toward cleaning beaches worldwide. They generated over $90,000 last year and plan to contribute even more with Project Blue.
Billabong has been known for their boardshorts since starting back in 1973. Innovators in style, performance and comfort, they’ve kept up with the super-stretchy boardshorts that other companies are developing.

The Hurley “Upgrade Your Boardshorts” event, was in fact, unique in comparison to ZJBH sales in the past. The food was clutch and surprisingly diverse, their screen-print transformer van offered a unique customization opportunity, and the turn out was more than solid. This day was by far, one of the busiest and most exciting days our Hurley store has seen, so far.
From 3pm-6pm we had non-stop flows of people either coming in to donate an old pair of boardies from any brand, get their new pair of Hurley Phantoms with Nike Flywire technology at half price, and/or taking advantage of the buy-one-get-one-free deal with the other deep selection of Phantom Boardshorts.
Halfway through the event, Hurley actually decided to throw in a free pair of Phantoms in for those who donated an old pair for an upgrade to the best pair of boardshorts available.
People were stoked, and the line for the screen-print machine was undeniable evidence of this successful promotional event.
And as you can imagine, the guys lucky enough to win the trip to Indonesia were grinning from one ear to another.

We had another awesome Friday night at the shop with artist Robb Havassy. Make sure to come by the shop on Friday, April 30th to see what other kinds of fine wines we will be pouring! This past Friday night ZJ Boarding House provided gallery space for the art of Robb Havassy, while at the same time taking the opportunity to promote his recent accomplishment Surf Story, a collection of surf-related art from various iconic surfers, photographers, writers and fine artists alike.
It’s a book that took Havassy more than two years to assemble and a project he can certainly be proud of. ZJ Boarding House is more than honored to have had the opportunity to promote such a monumental collection of creative expression from so many passionate members in the boarding community.
While Surf Story is a collection of work from a variety of figures involved in all ends of the surfing spectrum, this event was a great opportunity to get an up close and personal look at numerous pieces of Robb’s own artwork.
The works from Havassy’s portfolio range from expressive charcoal drawings out of his own sketchbook, to wood etchings and unique beach settings–many of which explore vibrant color schemes.
While many of the favorites are those painted on wood panels–which creatively coincided with the texture and pattern already provided on the wood surface, the variety of art medium is diverse and much appreciated.
Perhaps working with that which nature provides is something surfers can relate with? Either way, the event was a great opportunity to experience quality artwork, get a firsthand glimpse at Surf Story, and talk with the man behind it all.
