Kick off summer with the Santa Monica Pier Paddleboard Race, featuring up to 250 paddle contestants, outrigger canoe and dory boat demonstration competitions as well as a paddle gear exhibition. The event is a benefit for Heal the Bay, an environmental nonprofit dedication toward making Southern California's coastal waters and watersheds–including the Santa Monica Bay–safe, healthy and clean.
The start and finish of the races will take place on the sand immediately adjacent to the pier with the course running north and south in the heart of the Santa Monica Bay. The standup paddle and prone paddleboard races feature 5.5 mile and 1 mile courses, both of which take paddlers around the historic Santa Monica Pier.
For the dory competition, area lifeguards will row fiberglass rescue boats in both a 1 mile sprint and a crowd-pleasing 3 lap race through the surf zone. The dory competition is presented in cooperation with the National Doryman’s Association.
On the pier deck, manufacturers will show off the latest in paddleboards, accessories and clothing. An award ceremony will follow completion of the races for top finishers in each division.

Join us on Sunday, May 23rd from 8am-2pm for a surf demo clinic with Sunova surfboards. The friendly folks from Sunova will be outside in front of ZJBH at 8am with their boards available for free demos; you can take them out to the beach for a test drive! Then at noon, renowned shaper Burt Berger will be back at the shop spilling some of his secrets on shaping, materials and board performance. This is a great opportunity to try out high quality boards and learn a little from a master. Park in our lot, grab a board, have a surf, eat a taco and come back to ZJ Boarding House for some knowledge.

Gum for my Boat is a story of hope, focusing on the Bangladesh Surf Club and its members. The club consists of more than 70 boys and girls and it is helping to introduce surfing into a culture in a very unconventional method. Many of the children are street kids or come from very poor families. Some don't even know how to swim, but their love for surfing brings them together and into a way of life they never even knew existed. An ocean that was once deemed off limits due to fear and a very conservative Islamic culture, is now becoming a source of fun, escape and even a chance for a way to make a living. Â Â
